Director of Fund Development

THE POSITION

The Director of Fund Development is responsible for managing the Fund Development Department for Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, a community-based development corporation providing affordable housing and social services in San Francisco. Current major activities include foundation and corporate grants, direct mail, government contracts, major gifts special events and marketing. The Director of Fund Development also serves on TNDC’s Senior Management Team and provides leadership and guidance to the organization on resource development issues. This position reports to the Executive Director, and staff Board of Directors’ Fund Development and Nominating Committees. TNDC raises approximately $1.7 million annually from charitable sources. This position is full-time (40 hours a week), exempt.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Lead the Fund Development department in its resource development efforts, including planning and monitoring funding strategies, allocating resources for raising funds, managing the Fund Development staff, and providing key leadership support to TNDC board volunteers.
  2. Within the overall outlines of TNDC’s long range plan, sets development goals and objectives, determines which fundraising activities should be undertaken, and develops fundraising strategies and plans their implementation, both in terms of external contacts and internal support.
  3. Enhances systems for identifying and cultivating effective relationships with prospective donors and establishes recordkeeping systems to account for contributions received. Maintains contact with donors after gifts are committed, either personally or through reminders to others.
  4. Oversees the pursuit of gifts from foundation, corporate and other institutional donors.
  5. Leads the effort to stage two major annual events.
  6. Oversees the solicitation of individual gifts through direct mail and other means.
  7. Oversees the organization’s external communications, marketing and public relations functions.
  8. Personally participates in top level fundraising activities. Assists the Executive Director, Board members, and other volunteers in the solicitation of major contributions.
  9. Assist in preparing the organization’s annual budget; prepare development budgets; prepare monthly forecasting on revenue and expense projections with justifications and proposed modifications
  10. Provide organizational leadership as a member of TNDC’s Management Team on resource development issues.
  11. Partner with the Executive Director and Fund Development Committee on strategic resource development planning.
  12. Other duties as assigned by management.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, organize fundraising activities effectively, and participate in high-level development negotiations.
  • Thorough knowledge of top-level contacts with major sources of funding, including individual and corporate foundations and government sectors.
  • Keen ability to both hold “the big picture” and simultaneously ensure the execution of the many details involved in a robust resource development operation.
  • Ability to manage, lead and motivate the Fund Development department as a team and assist the Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors in successfully pursuing financial support for the organization.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of marketing and communications.
  • Strong computer literacy, including: competency with Microsoft Office applications and with the Windows environment; familiarity with the use of Internet, including use of search engines; prior experience with either Raiser’s Edge or Microsoft Access databases, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of and some experience in all phases of fundraising including major gifts, special events, grants and direct mail.
  • Ability to work within a very diverse workplace; and to relate to a broad spectrum of people outside of TNDC.
  • Confidentiality required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit resource development.
  • 3 years of management level experience.
  • B.A. degree or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant experience management and supervision of resource development functions in dynamic organizational environments.
