An Evening of Dining to Benefit TNDC
Area Restaurants to Donate 25% for Esteemed Center City Nonprofit

Harry Denton of Starlight Room fame serves as Event Chair

SAN FRANCISCO — Think of it as doing well by eating well. Or, put another way –  comfort food with a cause. On Tuesday, December 5, the first annual Home Cookin’ benefit will bring together restaurants throughout the Center City of San Francisco for the benefit of the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (www.tndc.org). With San Francisco’s best-known host Harry Denton of The Starlight Room as Event Chair and some of the City’s finest restaurants onboard, Home Cookin' is bound to become a “must eat” on everyone’s calendar.

“It’s a delicious way to donate,” says TNDC Executive Director Donald S. Falk. “San Franciscans love discovering new restaurants. Home Cookin’ is a perfect chance to discover the culinary creativity of the area and lend a helping hand.”

Fast becoming a dining destination, the Tenderloin – or as it has recently been dubbed “The Trendy Loin” – is home to some of the most notable and long-lasting eating establishments in San Francisco coupled with a more recent infusion of inventive eateries. Home Cookin’ will see participating restaurants from the Center Center and beyond take part. Bambudhha Lounge, Café Andrée, Cortez, Farmer Brown, Juni Teppan and Sushi Bar, Maharani, MoMo's, Saha, Tangerine and Zingari Ristorante will donate 25% of their evening’s proceeds to TNDC.

In 1981, TNDC was formed to develop permanently affordable housing in the Tenderloin and adjacent neighborhoods. Its mission: to make the Tenderloin a better place to live for low-income people by providing safe, service-enriched affordable housing and cooperating in community improvement and development efforts. The esteemed nonprofit is one of California's largest community-based low-income housing developers. TNDC owns and operates 23 buildings and 1,783 housing units in the Tenderloin and other central city neighborhoods. Overall, TNDC houses a mixed population of seniors, people with disabilities, other households with special needs, families, single individuals and others, the vast majority of whom are extremely low-income and at high risk of becoming homeless. Over 80% of TNDC's tenants have incomes less than 30% of the area median.

“TNDC’s housing and supportive programs represent human dignity and how all people should be treated – with respect, compassion and understanding,” says Falk. “For those we serve, having a place to live and prepare a nourishing meal is not simply about shelter, but about having a home. As we mark our 25th anniversary year, it’s the perfect time for a new annual event like Home Cookin’to celebrate our programs and services.”
