TENDERLOIN NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT CORP. TO DEVELOP
80 NEW AFFORDABLE FAMILY HOMES NEAR 7TH AND MISSION

SAN FRANCISCO — Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) just finalized the acquisition of 1036 Mission Street, clearing the way to transform a vacant parking lot into approximately 80 new affordable apartments for low-income families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Designed by Solomon E.T.C.-WRT, the mixed-use residential building will be tailored to meet the needs of families. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments will be designed with the needs of families in mind, including adequate room for storage and play, as well kitchens large enough to prepare family meals. Open-air courtyards will function as play areas and gathering spots for residents and their children. The ground floor will incorporate a neighborhood-serving commercial storefront and onsite offices for residential services.

“This is a great opportunity to create a safe and stable community as well as peace of mind for San Francisco’s poorest families,” said TNDC Executive Director Don Falk. “Moreover, it’s exciting to design something from the ground-up that meets the specific needs of families and their children.”

TNDC recently developed low-income family housing at Curran House – an award-winning building at 145 Taylor Street that was just named one of San Francisco’s most architecturally significant buildings by the San Francisco Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Like Curran House, the residents of 1036 Mission will have access to free onsite social services intended to assist families in stabilizing their lives.

The building will be developed over the next four years, with an expected opening in 2011. So far in 2007, TNDC has acquired, preserved, rehabilitated, broken ground and opened more than 500 affordable homes for San Francisco’s lowest income residents. These will go a long way toward achieving the City of San Francisco’s goal of ending chronic homelessness by creating 3,000 new units by 2010.

About TNDC
Founded in 1981, TNDC’s mission is to provide safe, affordable housing with support services for low-income people in the Tenderloin community and be a leader in making the neighborhood a better place to live. TNDC now owns and manages 25 buildings that provide homes for 2,500 extremely low-income seniors, families, people with disabilities, low-income wage earners, immigrants and others in the Tenderloin and nearby neighborhoods. In addition, TNDC provides on-site supportive services and resources such as social workers and after-school programs to help residents stabilize their lives and develop a sense of community.
