About TNDC
What is Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation?

Since 1981, Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) has been committed to making the Tenderloin a better place to live. We provide safe, affordable housing and support services in order to lay the foundation for a better quality of life for low-income people in San Francisco’s Tenderloin community.

At TNDC, we know that housing is the foundation on which people build their lives. And we know that due to the high cost of living in San Francisco, many low-income indviduals, seniors, and families are forced to choose between paying rent and other necessities like food and healthcare. We own and operate 30 affordable housing buildings serving 3,000 tenants in the Tenderloin and adjacent neighborhoods... and with 11 projects in our housing development pipeline, we will make over 1,250 affordable units available for homeless and extremely low-income San Franciscans in the next few years.

Our unique approach to supportive housing combines safe, affordable home environments with free and voluntary on-site social services to help tenants stabilize their lives and find resources for special medical, mental health, or substance addiction issues. We also provide the community with an after-school program where neighborhood children can rely on a safe place to play and learn, and a community organizing program that encourages residents to get involved in making positive change to strengthen the fabric of this developing neighborhood.

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

One of the densest and most diverse urban neighborhoods in America, the Tenderloin is home to over 30,000 people and more than 30 nationalities living within 40 city blocks. Included in 2009 on the National Register of Historic Places for its unique history and architecture, this vibrant neighborhood is one of the last places in San Francisco that many low-income individuals, families, and seniors can afford to live. While it suffers from social problems typical of many crowded urban environments, including drug and alcohol abuse, violence, high unemployment, and overcrowding, TNDC faces these challenges head-on, striving to revitalize the community while preserving its unique architecture, character, and diversity.

OUR RESIDENTS

70% of the residents in our buidlings have annual incomes below $14,000. They include seniors on fixed incomes, emancipated youth from the foster care system, low-wage workers, families on tight budgets, people with HIV/AIDS, and formerly homeless individuals recovering from substance abuse or mental illness.

• 600 seniors are living independently in TNDC buildings with the aid of our support services.
• 500 residents have disabilities or special needs.
• 240 people are formerly homeless, including families with children.
• 200 individuals have a mental illness diagnosis.
• 120 are children, many of whom live with single parents.
• 100 self-identified people are living with HIV/AIDS.

OUR STAFF

Our diverse and dedicated team of 270 staff members is committed to TNDC’s mission to improve the fabric of this neighborhood. We are a major neighborhood employer – nearly 25% of our employees are residents of the Tenderloin or the neighboring South of Market district and almost half of these are residents in TNDC buildings.

ON-SITE SOCIAL SERVICES

Our tailored approach to supportive housing combines affordable and safe home environments with free on-site social services. TNDC staff social workers help tenants stabilize their lives, find resources for special medical, mental health or substance abuse issues and develop a sense of community within our buildings. This system fosters stable resident populations and increases the likelihood that our tenants become more successful and self-sufficient members of society.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

TNDC’s Community Organizing department strives to involve the community in neighborhood revitalization efforts by encouraging residents and local businesses to become more involved. Through resident leadership development, community outreach, and other events, TNDC seeks to strengthen the community’s voice and address issues regarding public safety, civic engagement, and other critical topics that impact the neighborhood.

TNDC’s TENDERLOIN AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

More than 3,500 children call the Tenderloin home. TASP addresses the need for a safe, supervised space for over 200 of these children to play in downtown San Francisco. The program is open six days a week and is free to all who enroll. Through a combination of recreational outings, academic support, and leadership training, TASP enriches the lives of the children in the neighborhood and helps them pave the way for bright and successful futures.
