Aging at the Alexander
Jose Panulaya has shared his magic with the Alexander Residence for the last 20 years. A boxer in his youth, Jose, now 70 years old, uses his sleight of hand to entertain his neighbors.
Magic is one way Jose connects with others. His true companion, however, is his wife, Gloria. Together, the two have spent the last 18 years building a home at the Alexander and taking care of one another.
Gloria and Jose like to remain active as they age. Helping with coffee hour twice a week, supporting the Tenderloin Filipino Community Association, hosting people for coffee and cookies, joining prayer circles, and attending all the Health & Wellness activities the building has to offer such as Tai Chi for Arthritis and cooking demos.
Even as 84-year-old Gloria battles Lymphoma, she still volunteers for the produce drop providing the building with free groceries every Monday.
A big part of why Gloria and Jose give back to their building is to show their appreciation for their beloved social worker, Betty Duran.
Betty, a fellow Tagalog speaker and senior, is an incredible support to the couple. Betty is there when they need her. In turn, when Betty needs an extra hand cooking or cleaning for a holiday celebration at the Alexander, Gloria and Jose are right there to help.
