Health & Wellness Program

Everyone Deserves Health & Well-Being

We believe that access to nutritious foods and wellness resources are essential to a person’s physical and mental health. Right now, the systems we all rely on are designed to create enormous barriers for people based on their income, race, spoken language, gender identity, and more, from accessing resources.

Our Health & Wellness program aims to change that. We are creating opportunities for tenants and community members to access fresh produce through urban farming and free groceries through our community food pantries, achieve healthy aging through active living and evidence-based workshops, and foster community learning.

Our Health & Wellness program is guided by Harm-Reduction and Trauma-Informed models, principles of Cultural Humility (see Our Approach), and the TNDC values of Collaboration, Equity, Excellence, Inclusion, and Integrity. The team is a core part of the Tenant & Community Services Department.

TNDC Webster Street People's Garden grows for the community

The TNDC Webster Street People’s Garden is more than a new urban farm.

Serving seniors living at the Rosa Parks and Willie B. Kennedy Apartments in the Western Addition,  this green open space represents food security, equitable harvest distribution, and freedom from the stigma of standing in line for food.

Michelle's health grows with access to nutritious foods

A resident of the Tenderloin, Michelle has benefited from nutritious food near her at local corner stores and the TNDC Tenderloin People's Garden. She also learned new recipes to lower the risk of diabetes from one of our food demonstrations.

Amy builds her strength through Tai Chi

As Amy grows older, she knows how it important to stay active physically and mentally. But as a senior, it can be hard for her to travel far.

What We're Reading

Much of our Food & Wellness work centers around the idea of food as medicine. We are working on innovative ways to encourage our neighbors to learn about healthy food and take their health journey into their own hands.

Volunteer in the TNDC Tenderloin People's Garden

Every week there are opportunities to volunteer in our community garden on the corner of Larkin and McAllister Street! Help us grow and harvest fresh produce that goes back to the community at no cost.
