Sierra Madre Apartments
Serving 47 families and individuals with low incomes
TNDC has owned and operated the Sierra Madre Apartments as affordable housing since 1983. Built in 1912, the Sierra Madre provides 47 units of affordable housing for low- and very low-income households, including 42 studios and 5 one-bedroom units. The rehabilitation, completed in early 2002, provided necessary building system upgrades, improved fire and life safety, added accessibility, and improved overall quality of life in the building. The project was completed in five phases and was partly occupied throughout the process.
In 2020, TNDC started to plan a third major rehabilitation of the building. However, on June 19th 2021, a fire erupted inside the building, substantially damaging the building and making it uninhabitable. The building has been vacant since that time.
In March 2025, TNDC began the rehabilitation work at the Sierra Madre Apartments which includes extensive repair and mitigation related to the fire, voluntary seismic upgrading, new roof, elevator modernization, ADA accessibility upgrades, improved community spaces, plumbing upgrades, provision of free internet, and all new finishes and fixtures. As part of the rehabilitation, one unit will be converted to a studio, resulting in a total of 47 units comprised of 43 studios and 4 one-bedroom units. The project is projected to be completed by June 2026.
