The room becomes a hush as everyone takes a deep breath in. Then, all at once, a chorus of “lion’s breath” fills the community room at 383 6th Ave. The collective exhale is joyful, energizing, and surprisingly powerful—a reminder that wellness isn’t just about movement. It’s about community.
Around the room, neighbors smile as they stretch a little farther, reach a little higher, and encourage one another through each pose of seated yoga. Everyone moves at their own pace, creating an atmosphere that is welcoming, supportive, and full of possibility.
The monthly chair yoga class is one of several wellness programs offered to residents at 383 6th Ave through TNDC’s partnership with On Lok PACE. Designed for older adults, the class led by therapeutic yoga instructor Keiko Watanabe provides a gentle way for residents to improve flexibility, balance, strength, and mobility—all important components of maintaining independence and supporting healthy aging.
“Movement is one of the most powerful tools we have to support healthy aging”
said Paricia Moreno, On Lok PACE outreach representative. “Whether it’s improving balance, reducing stress, or simply creating an opportunity to connect with neighbors, these moments help older adults feel stronger and more confident in their daily lives.” About 20 residents take part in the yoga program. “Residents consistently tell us how much they enjoy this monthly chair yoga class," explains onsite social worker Jocelyn Chang. "Many share that they leave each session feeling happier, more relaxed, and energized. They appreciate having an activity that is accessible, enjoyable, and encourages them to stay active while strengthening connections with their neighbors and supporting their overall health and well-being.”
“For more than five decades, On Lok PACE has demonstrated that growing older doesn't mean having to give up independence, rather it means having the right team and resources to continue living life with confidence and dignity"
Moreno adds. On Lok PACE’s partnership with 383 6th Ave extends beyond yoga. Residents have also participated in educational sessions focused on diabetes management and fall prevention, providing practical information and resources to help them take an active role in their health.
Located in San Francisco’s Richmond District, 383 6th Ave is home to older adults and veterans who deserve the opportunity to age with dignity, stability, and connection. For TNDC, that means recognizing that a home is the foundation for health, belonging, and a fulfilling life.
Programs like chair yoga help fulfill that vision. They create opportunities for neighbors to gather, support one another, and celebrate what their bodies can do. Healthy aging is not only about adding years to life, but adding life to those years.
We are grateful for partners like On Lok PACE who help make these moments of care possible. Because sometimes, building a stronger community begins with something as simple—and as powerful—as taking one deep breath together.
