990 Polk Street Apartments

990 Polk Apartments building is located at 990 Polk Street in San Francisco and was built in partnership with Citizens Housing Corporation. An innovative approach to addressing homelessness was taken in the construction and design of the building by combining services-rich supportive housing units for a larger population in the low-income bracket. The property was voted the overall winner in the national Readers’ Choice Awards for Affordable Housing Finance Magazine in 2009. The building’s ground floor contains retail spaces and offices for resident services providers. A large community room and kitchen, computer center, laundry room, solarium, and outdoor patio are all accessible from the second floor. Another outdoor patio is located on the seventh floor, and on the eighth floor, residents can plant their own fruits and vegetables in a community garden. In the community room, residents can participate in educational programs and activities or reserve the space for a special event free of charge. The property includes green features such as Energy Star appliances, a high efficiency irrigation system, and low-VOC paints and adhesives. 10 of the units are fully accessible, and the remaining units are adaptable for individuals with disabilities. 50 units are set aside for formerly homeless seniors; the rents and services for residents of these units are subsidized by the City of San Francisco. 990 Polk Senior Apartments building is also one of the first new construction projects to receive funding from the California Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Housing Program.
